I agree with most of the comments but I think the game was good for that time. Also, Soul Reaver is 2 years younger, so obviously it should be better
I must say I'm impressed by the graphics, especially in the second one.More likelly by the polygon count of NPC and monsters wich surpasses by far many other psx games. On the other hand you'll notice the lighting is wack or non existent and pretty much comes as a trade for that.I would have used fixed camera angles with 2d environments like in RE and adding more story and RPG elements. This proves that the psx console could'vehandled some insane games at that time but who knows man…maybe expectations weren't that high at the time, games were worshipped pretty much as they were.
So after finding positive things to say about the worst abortions out there, this is what he craps all over?
You've changed, man.
I had this on pc and the sequel on dreamcast
I loved this game 👌
It's a CLASSIC
For the time this came out, in the fall of 1997, this was a sleeper hit. There was no fanfare, but everyone who played this loved it. It had a dark storyline, interesting creature designs, large levels to explore and extremely engaging combat. Perhaps if the reviewer had known how to play this, Nightmare Creatures' charm might have shined through. But, he's definitely right about one thing; the sequel was pure shovel-ware.
Um, this looks nothing like the N64 version. The gameplay was challenging… and the controls were terrible. It had potential. It was a decent budget game and the creature designs were pretty good. The PS1 version looks like shit.
i love this game
man I the best player in this game I can beat this game on hard mode with both characters I love the shit out this plus the music and better yet ps3 and ps4 have shit games this one is a classic and cheat code when you beat the game
I remember playing this on a demo disc.
holy crap this game@@@!!@!@1 so nostalgic i feel like i remeber playing as the giant blue dude at 1:07, must've been cheats or somthing. gosh this takes me back <3
Wow I had such great memories of this game, but now as I watch this video, it really aged horribly…
I think the 64 port improves a lot. The draining meter is just an awful idea.
Soul Reaver sucks. I have the Dreamcast version and I can't make myself finish it. So many slow block-pushing puzzles. I'm glad games have since come up with better ways to challenge me than to waste my time.
I remember playing this back when it was new. You're review is spot on- the graphics were kinda substandard and the controls difficult at best even back then, but it had a certain ballsy charm that I still have fond memories of. It was all about the monsters, they were visually creepy and (due to the often difficult controls) intimidating to go up against
Nightmare creatures was one of my favorite ps1 games to bad it wasn't ever remade, but Bloodborne is kinda the closes thing to it.
and yes the sequel to Nightmare creatures is awful. The 2nd game makes the first look like Dynasty Warriors 2, and the first game makes the 2nd game look like Bubsy 3D.
You want a game with more depth but still shitty controlers, and shitty story? Play Deathtrap Dungeon for Playstation, so bad its good. B Movie quality game.
nightmare creatures 2 is still kinda scary imo.
I totally forgot about this game. I bought it brand new back in the day. Played it quite a bit too.. The review is spot on. Its so generic that it doesn't stand out at all. Now Soul Reaver is a great alternative but I would also suggest Tenchu: Stealth Assasins. 🙂
Used to play a demo of this via a Playstation Magazine CD. I found it to be a awesome (tiny bit) game back when i was 14. Nowadays, this indeed doesnt hold up. But man, back in 1997 everything this dark and gorey was the shit.
mark please review "apocalypse" for psx. trust me. dude. yeah.
Always thought this game had potential…too bad the controls were complete ass.
