For the sake of my good memories of Blood Covered Repeted Fear I won't play rest of the series. Thx for the heads up.
The chapter that lead into Blood Drive made Book of Shadows completely worth it for me. It freaked me the hell out.
I like the review, it's an interesting thing thing to see someone who's not a VN fan review them. I personally liked this game, but then again I've been long time fan of visual novels and find them a great means of storytelling. To anyone who has an interest in corpse party and wants a good horror visual novel, I'd recommend this. If you dont like VNs, head his review because it won't change your mind
My biggest problem with this game is that it went WAY too ecchi.
"Book of Shadows is a visual novel" Me: Ok Derek, thanks so much for the review but that's all I needed to hear. Bye!
Somehow Youtube unsubbed me from you. Time to catch up on 5 videos, including over 20 minutes (!!!) of .hack review.
love your room Derek great with the ghost at the start again great review
pls do a suikoden 2 review.
Hi Super Derek! I really enjoy watching your reviews, especially the Breath of Fire retrospective as BoF 3 is my favourite game of all time! I was just wondering if you were going to review the Shin Megami Tensei Digital Devil Saga games? I dunno if you've played them but, to me, they're the best Turn-Based RPGs under the SMT name.
waiting for more dragon quest reviews!! Or maybe……i dont know….final fantasy 9 perhaps?
I know absolutely nothing about this series, I've only recently heard about it because of the 3DS release. Maybe I'll go check out that version since this one doesn't seem to be that great.
Probably one of the most critical SD reviews. Not that this is a bad thing. It's good to get a critical opinion on a game every once in a while. Not every game is favorable, for everyone.
I've got Blood Drive and and thinking of picking up the new 3DS game. I've not played any of them.
It's a shame this one wasn't quite up to snuff, as the first was such a pleasure to watch along with. And I too have lost the Halloween spirit, albeit for more personal reasons. Instead of getting stuck into SMT 4: Apocalypse like I had planned, I found myself playing through a much more lighthearted RPG "Wonder Boy in Monster World". If you're looking for something short and upbeat, I'd recommend it wholeheartedly. It certainly managed to cheer me up a bit after an extremely unpleasant couple of weeks.
I'm still playing the first game because I got the wrong end at chapter 5 and had to restart the whole damn chapter
I'd have to agree with you on this one. I took long breaks between the chapters and the only motivation to keep going was hearing about how the last chapter tied into the next game. I still found the game overall enjoyable, and while I don't regret playing it, it doesn't hold a candle to the first game.
Oh and Xseed's Tom commented on what exactly is canon and not for those curious: It's a series of short vignettes. Chapters 1, 2, 5 and 6 are non-canonical what-if scenarios, chapters 3 and 4 detail events that happened before the original Corpse Party (and ARE canonical), chapter 7 details events that happened during the original Corpse Party (chronicling SPOILER's descent into madness) (and is canonical), and chapter 8 takes place two weeks after the true end of Corpse Party (and is canonical), with a cliffhanger ending leading directly into Blood Drive.
Book of Shadows was a really big let down compared to the PSP of the first one. It was nice to see some more character development in this one, even though it was EXTREMELY long. Also yeah Visual Novels should just stick to dating sims, rather than horror titles, I find it just doesn't work so well, except for this one, Book of Shadows had its scary moments, and alot more graphical. I definitely wanted to continue my halloween special from last year [which was also corpse party] and complete it this year, sadly life just gets in the way. I'm glad you did it though.
Well, that was depressing.
for a VN the cut scenes (and the path you take in the story ) IS the gameplay, any gameplay that we'er used to is just a gimmick for the VN. So I find it odd that you are going down on the game for lack a gameplay. It is kind of like asking when are we going to get to the rides in escalatorland "This is the ride!" Sorry if i come off as jerk I was trying to be funny, I can understand why this is not your cup of tea.
Corpse Party may be the game that made horror rpg a thing but there are other hrpgs that are around (and most of them I think are free too) beside Corpse Party.
specking of "H" I feel like taking crazy pills for the sake of trying (not doing it well) to be funny will there be any review of hentai rpgs? something tell me that I know what you'er going to say
have a nice day
I think this game would have been easier to take if it came later in the franchise, with more games following the original's formula. Or at least if it had a "Gaiden" type label to indicate that it wasn't intended as a "real" sequel
You are some of the coolest viewers on YouTube. I love that we can disagree on some games, and still be normal rational people. You're the best. 🙂
Nice vid dude, I don't really think i'd enjoy this one. I've heard the newest one for the 3DS is pretty good though.
I played this game a while back i thought that the stories presented were very interesting. I liked to learn about the characters who didn't get much to do in the first game, and i've kind of gotten into visual novels lately so the excessive amount of reading didn't bother me one bit. As far as gameplay is concerned it was definitely a step down from the first game, and considering how different it is i don't blame any fan of the first one for disliking BoS.
I completely understand why you can't recommend this game (its not really a game and the $19.99 price tag is ridiculous) but its still sad; as a huge Corpse Party fan I think not playing this as travesty. You understand in the first game that the Corpse Party world is dark but Book of Shadows really shows you HOW FREAKING DARK this universe is. Even with its dud scenarios I believe the bonus chapter and IMO 2 of the other chapters are real stand outs. If you are a deep fan of this franchise and if you can get this at least a 50% discount, I recommend it.
What a pity. At least now I don't have to pick it up (I have been enjoying the first one thanks to your video).
Hmmmm… So this game sounds pretty much like a bunch of "What If" scenarios left over from the first game. With that thought in mind, I agree that this would have been best as a DLC add-on to the original. It definitely doesn't sound strong enough to be its own stand-alone title. The investigation mode could be interesting. A different perspective on looking over the school. But I really don't like the navigation bar, just judging by what you've shown here. : Great review, Derek!
Man, I was waiting for this review! I played the first one because of you, and I can't thank you more. You're AWESOME, Derek!
Guess I'll skip this one and go for the just released Corpse Party 3DS. That's a 3DS version of the 1st game, right?
For some reason I though it was this one I picked up earlier this year, but it was Blood Drive. Shame Book of Shadows was a mess.
its more like P3P version of persona 3 ehh?
Thank god you put this video out when you did. I was literally just about to buy this lol
