I played a good amount of sports games growing up. Probably the main reason I don't care for them that much anymore.
The fact that jocks think they are pro gamers just because they play cod. And fifa, madden to me is annoying.
Just from my perspective… I was always very bad at physical sports; which led to a disinterest in sports and subsequently a failure to understand the rules of sports which precludes me from being able to fully enjoy sports games. On the other hand, I was acceptably proficient in video games and I kind of fell into that as my identity
Not all sports games are bad. Blades of Steel, Ice Hockey, Rocket League, all really good games. That Madden series is garbage though. Great to buy if you want to replace a game case though.
I think its mostly due to the lack of creative sports games. We get FIFA, Madden, and 2K games every single year, but they play pretty much the same. It also doesn't help that the rights to most major sports leagues are only owned by two companies.
Show this video to James and Mike, Pat. 🙂
NHL 94 is the best hockey video game ever made
You know what I REALLY hate in sports games? They don't tell you the rules!
A sports game can be interesting if it doesnt try to be too realistic.
Something like FIFA, Madden, NBA will the crap out of me.
Games like NBA Jam, NFL Blitz, Punch Out, Mario Strikers are more on my taste.
Something to make the sport more fantasy and a unique way to play than the actual way to play outside.
Not to mention they come out with a new edition about every 1 or 2 years.
I would love to buy NBA 2Kcurrantyear if they just released the next season as DLC, instead of a whole new game. It would be great if they released updates every half or quarter season.
In the 90's not I, nor any of my regular friends had any sports games. A couple more "mainstream" friends/acquaintences had a few that I noticed. I disagree with the podcast. Sports games vs. "real gamers" was a thing before the internet.
i'm Australian the only sports games that interest me are cricket and Afl games but there isn't many of them which is a shame i will also say people might buy a system for rpg, first person shooters, sports game and so on its their choice in what they like and want to play
I think there is some truth behind, dont play sports games go out and play them. you cant do this with horror or shooter games because you would go to jail and monsters arent real lol
The way I see it is as Pat briefly mentioned, "jocks vs nerds." Games such as Call of Duty and Madden are deemed as acceptable to play as an adult due to their mature and low time investment nature. Contrarily, games like Final Fantasy that require a lot of time put in and are at first glance childish have a stigma of "nerdiness" or having "no life." I think the despise of sports gamers comes from the people that enjoy fantasy games see how they're lower on the pecking order than those who play sports games despite both are ultimately doing the same thing.
NFL blitz 2000 is still one of my all time favorite games
lol and the k'nex will always suck LOL
i always thought dance games and guitar hero were games that not real gamers played. like the lamers played
i agree i used to have alot of RPGs shooters and madden today it seems hooters are in their own camp sports people and RPG fans in other camps we are way too fragmented. Only game i would never own is a soccer game cause soccer is boreing
I don't mind sports games, I just can't stand that it is all most people play nowadays. I prefer fictional sports games such as NBA jam or Mario strikers. Everyone who has a game system has at least 1 sports game.
They do need to bring back ncca basket ball and football games!
