Unit 35 Buying and selling
Hello! Today’s program is about buying and selling, and importing and exporting. That’s buying and selling between different countries.
Importing and exporting For Britain, this car is an export and for Britain this car is an import. Harry’s cars: sale (reduceri; распродажа), bargains (negocieri; торги, выгодные покупки)! Good morning, Madame! Welcome to Harry’s Cars! How can I help you? I want to buy a car. Well, you’ve come to the right place! ( – Eu vreau sa cumpar o masina. – Dvs. ati venit la locul potrivit!; – я хочу купить машину. – Вы пришли в правильное место); We have cars from all over the world! What would you like: a Japanese car, a Spanish car, or this car, the best car in the show room (cea mai buna masina in salon; самая хорошая машина в салоне). It’s a world car! A world car? Yes! Every part of this car is made in a different country (fiecare parte a acestei masini este facuta intr-o tara diferita; каждая часть этой машины сделана в разной стране). The engine is made in Germany, the controls are made in Japan (controalele sunt facute in Japonia; элементы управления сделаны в Японии), the tires are made in France. The windows are made in Spain. What’s made in Britain? Ah, these! (the windshield wipers) (stergatoare de parbriz; стеклоочистители);
The engine is made is Germany. = They make the engine in Germany.
What kind of things do you buy? Are they made in your country or are they imported? I have a bicycle that is made in Taiwan, a car that is made in Japan, a Mazda. I have a guitar that came from Spain made by the Romero’s brothers. I have a saddle (sa; седло) that came from Australia. I have a Marilyn Manson bike, which comes from America and a Sony Walkman which comes from Japan. I have discovered among our artifacts (eu am descoperit printre artefactele noastre; я нашел среди наших артефактов; an object made by a human being, typically an item of cultural or historical interest) an old chest (un cufar vechi; старый сундук) of my great-great-great-grandmother, which was originally imported from England back in the 1850s. I have Greek Hands, I also have Japanese clothes and a grass skirt (fusta hawaiana; гавайская юбка) all the way from Hawaii (tocmai din Hawaii; аш из Гавайи).
This my new computer. It’s a portable computer (este un computer portativ; это портативный компютер). You can carry it easily (poti s-o porti cu usurinta; можете нести его с легкостью). It’s made in Japan. The factory makes about a thousand computers like this every month. Most of them are exported. About 300 a month are sold in Britain. Hardly any are sold in Japan (cu greu ceva sunt vindute in Japonia; с трудом что-то продается в Японии). So, the hardware (Elementele de dispozitive electronice; элементы электронных устройств), the computer is made in Japan, but the software (softuri; программное обеспечение) comes from California. This is a business program. A lot of software is developed in California. And it’s sold all over the world (se vinde in toata lumea; продается по всему миру).
Most of the computers are exported. = They export most of the computers. A lot of software is developed in California.
Karl Sheeler works for a computer company in Germany. He is in London at the moment to talk Julia Marsh and James Brady.
So Karl, why are you here (deci Karl, de ce esti aici; Карл почему ты здесь)? I’m here to talk about a new business project. What kind of project? We’re developing a new computer (noi dezvoltam un computer nou; мы разрабатываем новый компьютер) for children to use at home. But surely (dar cu siguranta; но с уверенностью) lots of computers are made for children and several of them are made for home use. How is your computer different? (cum este computerul tau diferit; каким образом ваш компьютер отличается?) In two ways? First, we’re a developing a better voice activation system (noi dezvoltam o sistema de activare a sunetului mai bun; мы разрабатываем лучше систему активации голосовой связи). A what? What does voice activation mean? I’m sorry. Look at this computer. This one doesn’t have voice activation system. In order to use it you have to read the screen then type your answer…. China … history, yes. But the new computer speaks to the child. It asks the question and the child answers by speaking to the computer. And what’s the other difference? Ah, it’s educational. Nearly all the computers that are sold to children are for games. Hardly any are made to help children with their studies (cu greu exista ceva, care sunt facute pentru a ajuta copii cu studiile lor; с трудом что-то производится чтобы помочь детям с их учебой). But yours will? Yes. Because we’re developing special software, study programs. I see. You’re developing the software in order to sell the hardware. Yes, you could say that. It sounds very interesting! But it is, and maybe you two can help me. How? We need an advertising agency here, in Britain. You mean you want us to advertise your computer? Yes! You realize that we are a very small company. Yes, so you must work for me to get bigger. Hm, what do you think? Yes, Karl, we’d love to!

Charles Morgan
There is an English sports car called Morgan. The Morgan factory is not like most car factories. It’s a traditional factory, (este o uzina traditionala; это трaдициональный завод) it’s very small. It only has about a hundred workers. The company was started by Harry Morgan. Today, his grandson, Charles Morgan is the production manager (managerul de productie; управляющий производством) at the factory. He explains how Morgan cars are made. The Morgan is built using a technique which we call coach building (ea este construita folosind o tehnica pe care noi o numim constructia de trasura; она построена используя технику которую мы называем строительство кареты). Coach building was very popular in the 1920s. And in fact all the best cars in the world were always coach-built. And what that means is that (si aceasta inseamna aceea ca; и это означает то что) rather like in the old days with coaches being built out of a wood frame and metal panels, we still build the car that way (aproape ca si in trecut cu trasurile care erau construite din schelet din lemn si table metalice, noi toi inca construim masina in modul acesta; почти как в прошлые годы с каретами которые были построены из деревянного каркаса и металлическими панелями, мы все еще строим автомобиль таким же образом). We start with the ash tree (frasin; ясень) and we make a frame and we then cover it with either steel or aluminum (noi facem un schelet si apoi noi o acoperim sau cu otel sau aluminium; мы делаем каркас и потом мы покрываем его сталью или алюминия). The car is constructed with a steel chassis (masina e construita cu sasiuri din otel; автомобиль построен со стальной шасси), and the engine, and the driveline (transmisia; трансмиссия), and the gearbox (cutie de viteze; коробка передач), and the back/rear axel is assembled into the chassis (osia din spate este asamblata in sasi; задняя ось/задний мост собран на шасси). We put the engine in the center of the chassis in order to give the car balance. The car, once it’s finished as a chassis (Atunci cind masina este finisata ca un sasiu; когда машина завершена как шасси) has a ticket put on it with the customer’s name on it. And even at this stage when the car is any 2 or 4 days old (masina are 2 sau 4 zile; машина имеет 2 или 4 дня), the customer can see his particular car going through our factory. The frame is assembled out of many, many different what we call body rails. (Scheletul este asamblat din multe, multe diferite cum noi le numim sine de corp; каркас собран из многих, многих как мы их называем рельс тела). And the skill of assembling the wood frame is to make sure that each joint is treated as a very important part of the overall picture of the car (si iscusinta de asamblare a scheletului din lemn inseamna de a asigura ca fiecare incheietura este tratata ca o parte foarte importanta a imaginii de ansamblu a masinii; и умение собирания деревянного каркаса значит обеспечить чтобы каждый стык был обработан как очень важная часть общей картины автомобиля). To that end (in acest scop; с этой целью), the joints are glued and screwed together (incheieturile sunt incleiate si insurubate impreuna; стыки заклеены и закручены вместе). There are 76 different pieces of wood and most of ‘em have a joint (at) both ends. The Morgan is built out of combination of parts (Morgan este construit din combinatii de piese; Морган построен из комбинации деталей), which we obtain from external supplies (noi obtinem niste parti din aprovizionari externe; мы получаем некоторые детали из внешних поставок) and parts that we manufacture ourselves (piesele pe care le producem noi-insine; детали которые мы производим сами). We manufacture many of the major components ourselves because we want to give the car its particular character (noi dorim sa-i dam masinii caraterul sau/infatisarea sa deosebit; мы хотим дать автомобилю свой особый характер/вид). The metal parts are made out of a flat sheet of metal (foaie neteda de metal; плоский лист металла) in every case. We make for example the fuel tank of the car (rezervorul de combustibil al mașinii; топливный бак автомобиля), we make the radiator of the car (radiatorul masinii; радиатор автомобиля). At the final assembly stage, the various items are fitted to the car (la etapa finala de asamlare, numeroasele piese sunt montate la masina; на последнем этапе сборки, различные детали крепятся к машине), like the heater(incalzitor; нагреватель), like the computer box that runs the engine (cutia cu computerul care conduce motorul; коропка с компютером которая управляет двигателем) , like all the electrical equipment that makes up the dashboard (tot echipamentul electric care formeaza tabloul de bord; Все электрооборудование что составляет приборную панель). Morgan’s are exported to virtually all the civilized countries in the world (sunt exportate in aproape toate tarile lumii; экспортируется практически во все цивилизованные страны мира) at one time or another (la un moment sau altul; в один или иной момент). We have agents in approximately 15 different countries. The proportion of cars that are exported compared to the proportion that are sold in the UK is half-and-half (proportia de masini care sunt exportate in comparatie cu proportia care sunt vindute in Regatele Unite este de jumătate-jumătate; Доля автомобилей, которые экспортируются, по сравнению с долей, которые продаются в Великобритании половина на половину). So approximately 50% are exported. The Morgan sports car has a unique look (Masina sportiva Morgan are o infatisare unica; Спортивная машина Морган имеет уникальный внешний вид). But it also has I think a unique character and that character comes from the materials that are used in the making of the car (materialele care sunt folosite la fabricarea masinii; материалы которые были использованы в производство автомобиля) and it comes from the way it’s built and the people who built it, because undoubtedly (fara indoaila; cu siguranta; несомненно) of a hundred people who built this car, they all put a little bit of themselves into the car (ei toti au investit cite putin din ei insisi in masina; они все вложили немного от себя в автомобиль).
Mmm, lovely cars. That was Charles Morgan at the Morgan Car Factory where a hundred people are employed making cars. And this is a studio where 3 people are employed making programs. And now the program is finished! Good bye!
