In this video, I go over my thoughts on sports games in general and give you an explanation for why I don’t review them. Gameplay is from Baseball Stars 2, which you can check out on Steam…

Have you played any sport DWTerminator?
ever played 2k?
I was never a sports fan, and sports games never looked entertaining to me when they had any grounding in reality. I always preferred something more over the top and silly, which is why the only sports games I've liked have been Mario games.
two words:they suck
nba 2k is a phenomenal basketball simulation. why would i take the time to play a basketball game instead of playing for real? first of all you have to actually be good at the sport unless you want to embarrass yourself out there. secondly it can be pretty difficult to get 9 other people to play full court with you. ( if you are playing half court you are wasting your time) and third…. well im an nba fan and i want a simulation of the sport i can play alone or competitively.
you can bash madden all you want because that game hasnt been good for years. but when you go after nba you should at least know what you are bashing. the most critically acclaimed sports series of the last decade.
I don't play sports games much these days, but I'm definitely not against them. So I can think of plenty of reasons to play these games, some of which you have touched upon yourself: 1. You enjoy the power fantasy, the idea of taking control of your favourite club/team or of competing at the highest level of a sport. 2. Some games have managerial modes with deep tactical and/or economic simulations behind them. See Football Manager, which is exclusively a management sim of the sport. You can't control the players directly. 3. Some sports games actually have very high skill ceilings and are very competitive in PvP modes. 4. Playing a sports game on PC/console is often more convenient and less time consuming than setting up a real match with your friends. 5. Your health or physical condition may prevent you from playing the actual sport in any meaningful way. 6. You love watching a sport, but don't particularly like engaging in physical activities. Or you're so bad at playing the sport, you'd rather sit on the sidelines. 7. You don't know know enough people to organize matches with, especially true for team sports. 8. The sport is simply not practiced in your country. I think the number of people who play (American) football around here is in the dozens. 9. The sport is too expensive or there aren't any venues where you can practice it close to your home. 10. I know plenty of people who are not particularly interested in football (soccer), but for some reason they enjoy playing FIFA or PES against friends. Probably true for other sport games too.
The only sports games that hold my attention are either boxing or pro-wrestling games, because you can't exactly just go outside and challenge your friend to a hell in a cell 6-man elimination match for the WWF World Heavyweight title like you can challenge your friend to a pickup game of b-ball.
I'm a huge NBA, NFL, and MLB fan, and I also play sports games a lot. However for me when I play sports games i'm not trying to step in the role of a players, but rather the GM/manager/coach. The majority of time I spend in sports games is managing things, not actually playing them. Making trades, managing the budget, scouting players, creating play books, is usually what I do the most. Obviously the reason I like this is because I like the sports and like the idea of running a team. Sports games simply put should be played by those who enjoy the sport in real life, they're not for everyone. They're good for those of us who like them, and boring as sin for everyone else.
You make very good points. Other than the arcade-style games I stopped playing sports games years ago. Though, I gave up Madden since I see no reason to keep buying new games for different rosters. But that can apply to any sports franchise. If money wasn't a factor I think one game a generation would suffice. Free DLC could update the rosters.
Why bother trying to even put an opinion down like he said at the end of the video? He regularly shuts down any opinion that's different than his, because of his sanctimonious and arrogant demeanor anyway
I play some sports games including snooker, football (soccer), motor racing, and wrestling. I also enjoy playing sports in real life. They can offer a different experience to actually playing the sport. Such as a football video-game, where you control the whole team.
I think sports games make good multiplayer/arcade games. They tend to play just as well locally/online, as a lot of them don't require split-screen. They are easily accessible, as most people already know the rules. They do lack depth, and tend to have bad single-player. However can have a high skill ceiling. Sports games usually have physics based gameplay. Physics based gameplay is one of my favourite, especially with regard to multiplayer. Physics based gameplay is not scripted, is unpredictable, and therefore tends to have high replayability.
In the case of something like a wrestling, UFC, Boxing game – I don't really see it as any different from any other fighting game. Wrestling makes really good multiplayer games; four player, tables, weapons = super fun.
WSC Real Snooker has good multiplayer turn-based gameplay. I like it because it is very strategic, and you can also play it casually; there is no rush, and you can do other things while playing.
Do a thoughts on FPS games And even open world vs linear games
You do a lot of videos about how bad things are. Have you done any videos on what makes a good RPG, for example? Or something like that.
You would find it easier to go fight on a battlefield than to play in the NFL, actually. However, one results in egregious bodily harm, and the other is a battlefield.
Wow! we both have the same mind set, I never thought we're so alike DW ,I also hate sports games and racing games. All the other kids in my school really like them but I just can't understand the appeal because there nothing really fun about playing basketball or driving around in a car,in virtual environment because it does not give you any adrenaline at all which is the point of playing sports.
If a person really likes a certain sport, and likes playing video games, it makes sense for him to want to combine them. Sports games aren't selling for no reason. It can be a burden to play some sports in real life, just because you can technically do it, doesn't mean you wouldn't want it in video game form. You can technically go out murder people and steal cars, is that why you wouldn't play GTA?
I totaly agree. I used to play football when i was a kid and teenager, i really loved it. But i never got into the sport games, as most of my friends did. My friends also loved to watch sports, which i don't – again i rather just play the sport myself. My conclusion is that most people who play alot of sport games simply just love sports. They eat, breath and live sport. I don't belive it's too different compared to people who love Japanese culture and stuff like that, they tend to talk about it all the time in my own precieved experience with them.
Each one to his own!
I like sports games. It depends on what sports games you play. I think that tennis and football (soccer) games are the best because there is deep ball control in those games, especially if you play PES or TopSpin. When it comes to Baseball, NHL, & NFL, they haven't evolved in terms of depth of control, so those games do get boring. But I feel that the same thing can be said for FPS games. Eg: hide behind a crate & throw a grenade? I was doing that in Goldeneye on the N64. It's 2016 and the player movement is still Digital as hell. It's easy to bash Sports games but at least they don't saturate the market or lock half of the game for DLC. If there was no internet COD, Battlefield etc would be dead already.
i remember really liking the Madden games for its strategic play and mechanics… in 1998. Not much has changed since then other than presentation and now it's just boring.
I really wish that concepts like nba jam and blitz still were made often because those were fun as hell.
Glad you brought EA up, because EA is actually the bigger offender in this arena. (No pun intended.) They've pretty much been doing Sport Games since dinosaurs roamed the Earth. Plus, if you know EA inside and out, you know that care more about style over substance, rather than the other way around.
The other end of the spectrum is why Monkey Island and (to a larger extent) King's Quest are still recognized as some of the best games out there. They have more quality over quantity, for the most part. (Even though they are a completely different story from EA and sports games in general.) They're more for kids and teens rather than hardcore gamers, like yourself. And the game companies are probably aware of that.
Honestly, Sports Games for me are both boring and outright frustrating to play. Because you can still go outside if you want to do "the real thing", like you said in the video. Plus, the controls suck for EA Sports Games across the board, because they're EA. (GRRRR!!!)
Hi DW why not do a top 10 favourite games list
My friends think my game collection is bad because it doesn't has any sports game, and all they have is like 9-10 fifa , 1 call of duty and GTA 5.
I am not particularly interested in sports games but I do have interest in space strategy games or strategy games in general. If you have the patience I would like to see a review of Master of Orion or why not the Galactic Civilization games or Stellaris? What about the classic Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri?
I play them for the franchise mode which is essentially a RTS game.
Am I the only one getting a new comment section layout?
Madden for life or Fallout 4?
So why play a game where you can be an mma cage fighter when you can get your ass kicked in the ring by gsp instead? Lol
Yeah, I don't like sports games, either. They just seem pretty boring to me. And, they've never been my thing.
All the people I know who like sports games are generally folks who also really enjoy sports IRL. They like to play on their phones when they can't be outside playing the game. It's more of a time killer than anything else, it seems.
