These are my favorites: 1- Final Fantasy X + X-2(love both) 2- Dragon Quest VIII 3- Ni No Kuni 4- Rogue Galaxy 5- Kingdom Hearts 1+2
final fantasy vii, xenogears, legend of dragoon, chrono cross, and grandia (all series)
Chrono Trigger Final Fantasy 9 Souls series … in no particular order.
Ni no kuni looks awesome :0
My top 5 JRPG: Tales of Xillia 1+ Xillia 2 ( I consider Xillia 2 to be more like an expansion pack than its own game) Kingdom Hearts Birth By Sleep Pokemon Omega Ruby Time and Eternity (Despite what everyone says, I really like this game. It has really unique battle system) Ni no Kuni/ Valkria Chroniceles
No Xenoblade Chronicles? No Chrono Trigger? No EarthBound?
No Dark Souls ? My favourite RPG for Xbox360.
Surprised I didn't see any SNES games on here like Secret Of Mana. Still a great list mind 🙂
You kidding? Your taste is awesome! I own all those games but am yet to play Dragon Quest and Xillia. Too many games to play! Ni No Kuni was amazing, loved it! Same with Final Fantasy X but VII will always be my favourite 🙂
Good list Gemma!
My JRPG top 5 is as follows; 1. Secret Of Mana[AKA Seiken Densetsu 2 Jpn], SNES 2. Crystalis[AKA Godslayer Jpn], NES 3. Chrono Trigger, SNES 4. Final Fantasy 3 US[AKA Final Fantasy 6 Jpn], SNES 5. Terranigma UK[AKA Tenchi Sozo Jpn], SNES
Been playing games a bit longer than most gamers, thus the older titles in my list. Gemma, I REALLY recommend you take the time to play through Chrono Trigger. There is a legit reason it is considered to be one of the best RPG's of all time. It may be a bit dated but it is still awesome! The DS version has a few extra's that are fun, but the SNES version is the best.
I wish I liked JRPGs as I love turn based battles. Â But I just can't tolerate the endless grinding and always controlling kids. Â Completely ruins it for me.
Totally agree with Final Fantasy 10… I remember being totally sunk into it, though I didn't finish it either. I've bought the HD remake to play through again and hopefully finish it this time..
I wonder if we got stuck at the same point? 🙂
My favourite Final Fantasy is XII – I don't think there's all that many people who agree with me though!
My favourite JRPG's of all time though are Skies of Arcadia and Dragon Quest VIII – it's a tie between those two. Then it's FF XII,. then Wild Arms 3 followed by Shadow Hearts.
I would agree with a lot of these but I'd throw the Sailor Moon RPG for Super Famicom in there. great vid!
Great vid, Gemma. I'm surprised you picked 5 that I somehow haven't experienced FF7 the exception). Not gonna lie, I thought Secret of Mana would be there, but hey… That's just me, the SNes and PS1 has some awesome JRPGs, I hope I'll get around to covering them for Retro Asylum eventually
Bravely Default is a great JRPG and probably my favourite of all time. It feels incredibly classic but at the same time it adds so much extra's while still being very friendly towards new players.
Awesome video, i've played 3 of them and own your number 1 and 2. As soon as i finish with Xenoblade Chronicles i will start Ni No Kuni. However I have never played a Tales game and think that its about time I did. Keep the vids coming Gemma 🙂
1. Final Fantasy 3 (6) – SNES 2. Secret of Mana – SNES 3. Zelda III: A Link to the Past – SNES 4. Final Fantasy 7 – PS1 5. Breath of Fire – SNES
I never did get around to playing Chronotrigger, I'm sure that would've made the list if I had.
Grandia 2 was a cracking game. I had on the Dreamcast back in the day. I'm thinking about getting it again but for ps2. It's bloody expensive to buy for Dreamcast now on eBay.
Nice video maam! You'll be shocked to know never played a final fantasy!
I love Jrpgs ,but I have to be in the mood for them ,not something I can just play anytime for several reasons . Anyway good list .really want to give ni no kuni a try when I get the time . Good video as always;)
Some of my friends and other people hate FF10 but its honestly one of my favorites. It was one of my first rpgs in general and I always get so los tin it.
I am very much into the classic JRPG's back on the SNES Â like Earthbound, Chrono Trigger, Super Mario RPG and Breath of Fire. Nice list btw.
Although I haven't played that many JRPG's, as I am more of a platformer guy, but I have a lot of fond memories with FF7. It was one of my first games for the PS1. At first I didn't understand what the objective of the game was, I was about 5 years old when I played it originally, I was too used to games like Crash Bandicoot. But as I got older and became used to game mechanics, I beat the game in one week and fell in love with it. Although FF6 is my favourite in the series, FF7 is the most nostalgic one for me, and it was a great introduction to the genre 🙂
Loved the video! I've been looking to play some more jrpgs and have a ps3. I guess it's high time I picked up Nino kuni. Ty very good video!
As person who makes vids about JRPGs I have to say this list is pretty good.
My favourite JRPG of all time was Star Ocean 2nd Story on the ps1. was exeedingly rare a few years back and had supposedly 50 endings. sadly i capitalised on the monetary value of the game and sold my MIB Star Ocean a few years ago. "oh no" i hear you say, well luckily as it happens because it was re-released on the PSP the year after and the price plummeted. So i don't think i did that bad. I do miss it now and again tho.
i always thought of JRPGs as the turn based battles, but yea, you picked some great titles here.. i will check out Xillia some time for sure. loved Ni No Kuni, didnt finish it tho, need to go back to it one day.
ive only played 1 JRPGS which was the first final fantasy.
Yes to Dragon Quest, Xillia and NI no KUNI. Could never get into the FFs so would replace with Shadow Hearts and Bravely Default.
5. Final Fantasy 4 4. Kingdom Hearts 2 3. Xenosaga 2. Dragon Quest 8 1. Persona 3 FES/Portable
Cool video. Loving the Streets of Rage music in the background as well!!
My favourite jrpg at the moment is phantasy star online on the dreamcast. I should have bought this back in the day and enjoyed it online but there seems to be plenty to do offline anyway… I guess they knew people wouldn't want to tie up the telephone line for hours back then. My favourite jrpgs always seem to be the one i am currently playing for some reason, unless I really can't get into it. Dreamcast seems to be a good system to collect for too these days on a cost per enjoyment factor. Thanks for creating this video, I enjoyed seeing your top 5 and your presentation is top notch. 🙂
Some great ones you have here. Tales of Xilla is one I wanted to play but never got to.
These are my favorites:
1- Final Fantasy X + X-2(love both)

4- Rogue Galaxy

Chrono Trigger
Final Fantasy 9
Souls series

Final Fantasy VII not at number 1!… Eep, the disagreements are soon to follow.
Fantastic choices, all games that I've played, loved and finished. Ni No Kuni in particular blew my mind, it's just such a wonderful story that takes the cliché of boy on an adventure and runs away with it. My only disappointment was that it ended… why did it have to end? Why!?…
